Diversity Brings Perfection and Peace.
When Muslims celebrate Eid, on the other hand, Christians also celebrate the day of Jesus Christ’s ascension. A rare moment wherein a day we can experience two religious celebrations at once.
Imperceptibly the month of Ramadan is going to pass, and we are starting to welcome the Eid Mubarak celebrations. However, there is something different from this year’s Eid Mubarak. Not only because we still have to celebrate Eid in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, but on a day when Muslims celebrate Eid, on the other hand, Christians also celebrate the day of Jesus Christ’s ascension. A rare moment wherein a day we can experience two religious celebrations at once. Then, have you ever wondered what it feels like to live in a family that celebrates two different religious holidays on the same day?
For some people, it may sound a little strange. But for me, it was actually very interesting and made me learn how to accept and appreciate diversity. As someone who grew up in a family with different beliefs, at first it was a little difficult and confusing. Because after all, every belief has its own rules and procedures for worship. But from here I learned that everything has distinctions that make it unique, and that uniqueness brings harmony in life. So, what’s the good way to live in diversity? Here are the things I did to address it.
Realizing that diversity can strengthen unity.
A strong building will not be formed if it is only built with the same material. It is the distinctions of materials in the construction that strengthens the building. Each material has its own uniqueness, function, and advantages. Just like us as individuals in society. Everyone has their own characteristics, life’s vision, culture, and beliefs that make us unique. We must accept this uniqueness and make it an advantage to strengthen the fraternity.
Diversity is not a crime.
Sometimes things that we think are different or strange are caused by a lack of understanding. To respond to this, we need to be open and willing to get to know others better. By recognizing differences, we can understand and appreciate diversity.
Tolerance is the key to determining the success of life in diversity.
Tolerance can be interpreted as the ability of each person to be patient and refrain from things that are not in line with him. With an attitude of tolerance, conflict and division between individuals and groups will not occur. Many people call tolerance the main key to peace that should be maintained.
In a bigger scoop, Indonesia is founded on differences in ethnicity, religion, and culture. This is what makes Indonesia a beautiful country. Differences between us are what make life so interesting. So embrace the differences between yourself and other people — but remember that what is a fascinating difference to you is just their normal life!
The best way to respect other people is to strike a balance between curiosity and appreciation: ask questions if your friends are open to it and learn how to just silently observe and appreciate the differences that make us unique.
