THE HYBRID LEADER 2020
As you apply this superpower to yourself, keep in mind that there is no way of turning back but move forward stronger.
Earlier this year, the entire world facing the COVID-19 outbreak, including Indonesia. The pandemic causing focus shifting across the sector and many leaders adjusting their leadership style throughout the multi-function platform.
The good news is that it’s quite possible in releasing the new leaders into a remote-working environment as we are all being tested to adapt to new ways of working and norms. Hybrid leaders, it’s not only the new joiner in the company but also the current people. The question is, how to be a hybrid leader in this situation? Let’s begin with the end mind and here are some guides for you.
Be crystal clear about the short-term objective and long-term objective.
Like every leader in transition, we need to re-adjust our process. As we are being pushed to achieve many tasks and at the same time maintaining our physical health and mental health. Every leader needs to understand the value proposition of the task they are doing and the existence of the role. As pandemic causes crisis to our yearly goal, the goal may not change but the process, timeline, and mindset do.
Re-setting expectation between yourself and the team.
We all must already set the personal goal and professional goals earlier this year, or you may call it “the new year resolution”. Do take a look at the resolution. Which list has been checked and which hasn’t. You will realize that there’s a gap. Be open-minded enough to yourself, be agile and flexible to re-setting the expectation to yourself and the team. The sky is the limit, create a realistic plan to reach the sky.
Structured learning process.
WFH (Working From Home) period gives us much time to conquer the task we wish to do and haven’t been doing at all, and there will be always the first time for everything; virtual training, virtual meetings, virtual self-discovery, virtual team experience, virtual mentoring, etc. And as some of us are back at WFO (Working From the Office), do not abandon the greatest change and the new positive behavior you have during the lockdown period. Structured the task, set your priority right, and accelerate every learning process. At the end of the day, reflect on what you’ve done on the inner journey (understand your personal value, reflect on the experience) and outer journey (challenging role, task, and environment, and interaction with multi-stakeholder).
Self-activation
As a leader, leading in this era of change, urgency, and accountability requires so many skills. You need the energy to be fully present even as you’re fretting about more than 50 emails piling up in your inbox. You need the patience to be empathetic when facing some difficulties. You need the self-control to be open and vulnerable without losing your team’s confidence. You need to be agile and flexible in terms of timeline and learning process. And you need the endurance to be present, patient, creative, and controlled day after day and week after week. Overall, you need tremendous fortitude.
Those are just some superpowers tips to be a hybrid leader. As you apply this superpower to yourself, keep in mind that there is no way of turning back but move forward stronger. Remember, one-leader develop our-self through others and leader create leaders.
Definitely I’m-possible. If you decide it is.
