Some of you fresh-faced-future-goal-getter-graduate who are fortunate enough to have a clear roadmap of where you want to go, where you want to be, what you are going to do after college, or even like my teammate Maulana from the previous article, you already have the experience and knowledge to start, I applaud you, truly. Just believe in yourself, work your butt off, and sooner or later you will see it will all be worth sticking to.

But to you all who wakes up staring at the ceiling and ask yourselves for the hundredth times “Now what?”, I feel you, I WAS you. Growing up, I did not come from a wealthy family, so after my graduation back in 2010, I decided that whatever first gig I get, I will do it 110%, and see where I grow from there. As you can imagine, not having any plan did not pan out well.

Now I wish for you to have a different perspective towards looking for a job, I want you to know that the options are endless for today’s workforce as long as you are willing to do the work passionately. The way I see it, I can give you a tip or two or more about kickstarting your career :

Know the industry

The first job I had set the course of what my career came to be. Whether it is banking, technology, or consumer goods companies, research is a must! List down the pros and cons and talk to the people who already have the inside knowledge of the industry because it could be your home for the next 5–10 years.

Know your strength and weaknesses

Not just because the interviewer or recruiter will ask you these questions, you have to get to know you! Be confident enough to declare your strength, brave enough to admit your weaknesses, and use them to your advantage. I know it sounds simple but when you recognize yourself well, it will have a huge impact on your career.

Have a positive mindset

This is your beginning. Be excited, be brave, and hold yourselves accountable! When you put your mind into something and work toward it, there is a lot of things you can achieve unexpectedly. Focus on your goal and be resilient to get there.

Do not be afraid to suck

When we dip our toes into something new, we are sometimes afraid of asking questions and speaking our minds, but now I know it depends on how we learn, we ask a bunch of questions, we make mistakes and we learn from the experience. That is how we become great at what we do!

I know it feels like we wake up to a different world every several weeks now and with that comes with uncertainty and it can be scary. So do the work, put on a brave face and one thing left to do is not being afraid to start! I wish you have a wonderful journey!
